How to get ChatGPT to recommend your app
ChatGPT names the apps that the web pages it reads keep naming: "best X app" roundups, Reddit threads, review videos and App Store pages. To get recommended, get your app onto the pages assistants cite for your category, describe it on your own site in the words people ask with, and check the answers regularly.
App Store rank doesn't carry over on its own. When we asked a search-grounded assistant for the best app in 78 categories, its first pick matched the App Store's #1 in only 49% of them, and the apps it named had a median of 34,078 ratings against 128,432 for the store's top result. Its picks follow what gets written about apps, so a smaller app with good coverage can beat the category leader.
That study ran on Gemini with Google Search. ChatGPT searches through different providers, so its picks differ, but the mechanism is the same: retrieve pages, then summarize the apps those pages recommend.

How to check what ChatGPT says about your app, by hand
Use a temporary chat so memory from your own conversations stays out of the answer.
- 01
Write the questions buyers ask
Five to ten, in their words: "best habit tracker for iPhone", "habit tracker without a subscription", "alternative to <the category leader>". Include your category phrase and the job people hire the app for.
- 02
Ask each one three times
Ask in ChatGPT with search on, then in Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Mode. Answers are sampled, so one run proves little. Note every app named, its position, and whether you appear.
- 03
Collect the cited pages
Open the sources listed under each answer. The pages that name competitors but not you are your target list.
- 04
Read what's said about you
Where you do appear, check price, platforms and features. A wrong fact usually traces back to one outdated page, which tells you who to contact.
- 05
Confirm your own pages are indexed
Search site:yourdomain.com in Google and Bing, and make sure robots.txt doesn't block OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. A page that isn't indexed can't be retrieved.
- 06
Repeat every month
Keep the same questions and compare. Nobody alerts you when an assistant stops naming your app.
What our 78-category study found
In August 2026 we asked a search-grounded assistant to recommend apps in 78 categories, three times each, and put every answer next to what App Store search returned for the same words that day. All 78 rows are at metarun.dev/research/ai-app-discovery.
The assistant reaches for smaller apps. Streaks was named first for "habit tracker" over an app with 144,966 ratings, and Mela beat the store's top recipe app. Store success guarantees nothing: 14 category leaders never came up in any run. The answers were stable too, with the same #1 coming back 93% of the time, so absence isn't noise you can wait out.
How ChatGPT and other assistants find apps
For a question like "best budgeting app", an assistant with web access searches, reads the results and summarizes the apps those pages recommend. It cites web pages, not only your App Store listing: apple.com, home of the public App Store listings, was cited in 90% of our categories, but alongside YouTube, Reddit and a long tail of review sites and blogs, 376 domains in all.
Each assistant searches a different index, so ranking well in Google doesn't guarantee a ChatGPT mention. Two things hold everywhere: a page has to be indexed to be retrieved, and it has to say something quotable about your app. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlated with visibility in Google's AI Overviews at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. That's correlation only, but it points the same way as our data.
Get your app recommended by AI: be on the pages it cites
Start with roundups. In Ahrefs' study of 750 ChatGPT prompts, "best X" lists were 43.8% of the page types cited, and brands placed higher on those lists were mentioned more. Take the cited pages from your manual check and write to each author with something checkable: what your app does differently, current pricing, a promo code so they can try it.
Then go where people talk. Reddit was cited in 59% of our categories and YouTube in 74%. Answer questions in your niche's subreddits as yourself, say you made the app, and bring it up only where it fits; Reddit's content policy asks for authentic participation and bans content manipulation. For YouTube, send the app to reviewers who already cover your category. Your own articles count too: habi.app, habitbox.app and getfinny.app were each cited in three to five categories.
Make your own site and listing easy to quote
Pick one category phrase people ask with ("habit tracker", not "behavior design platform") and use it in your homepage title, first heading and first paragraph, next to plain facts: what the app does, platforms, price. Microsoft's guidance for AI answers says to keep key answers in visible text rather than tabs or accordions, because assistants may not render hidden content. A short plain-text FAQ gives them sentences to quote.
Your App Store listing should say the same thing. The name (up to 30 characters), subtitle (up to 30) and the opening of the description are what any reader of the listing sees first, so state the category there, and set the Marketing URL to your site.
Is ChatGPT app store optimization the same as ASO?
They overlap in your listing text and split everywhere else. ASO works on Apple's ranking: keywords, conversion, ratings. Getting named by an assistant, often called answer-engine optimization, works on what the web says about you. Our data says a strong store position doesn't transfer by itself: 14 of 78 category leaders weren't named at all.
What doesn't work, or isn't proven
llms.txt: Google says you don't need AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features. Ahrefs checked 137,210 domains in May 2026: 28% published an llms.txt, and 97% of those files got zero requests that month. It's harmless, but don't expect it to change what ChatGPT says.
Keyword stuffing: there's no evidence that packing pages with competitor names gets you recommended, and on the App Store it breaks guideline 2.3.7. Assistants quote sentences, and a keyword list gives them nothing to quote.
Fake reviews and planted threads: manipulating App Store reviews or search breaks guideline 5.6.3 (Discovery Fraud), and Apple says it removes the apps and expels the developer. Reddit bans content manipulation too, and a thread exposed as planted is the opposite of the mention you wanted. MetaRun takes the same line: it measures where you stand and never posts, comments or writes reviews for anyone.
Common problems and how to fix them
ChatGPT recommends a competitor with fewer ratings than my app
Why: Ratings feed the App Store's ranking. The assistant recommends what its retrieved pages recommend, and your rival is on those pages. In our study, named apps had a median of 34,078 ratings against 128,432 for the store leaders.
Fix: Run the question a few times and open the cited sources. Pitch the roundup authors who name the rival but not you, answer the Reddit threads honestly, and make sure your site uses the category phrase those pages use.
The assistant describes my app wrongly (old price, missing features, the wrong product)
Why: It's repeating a page it retrieved: an old review, a stale roundup, or a different product with a similar name.
Fix: Find the cited source and ask its author to update it. Put correct facts in plain text on your site and listing (price, platforms, what's included). If your name collides with another product, pair it with your category everywhere you control, such as "Example Habits, the habit tracker for iPhone".
My app is never mentioned in my category
Why: Common causes: none of the cited pages mention you, your site and listing use different words than people ask with, or your pages aren't indexed where the assistant searches (Bing for ChatGPT, Google for Gemini).
Fix: Check indexing first: site: searches in Google and Bing, and a robots.txt that allows OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Then adopt the phrase people use, and work through the cited pages one at a time. Re-check monthly.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT recommend apps?
Yes. Ask it for the best app for a job and it names specific apps; when it searches the web, it lists the pages it used. Which apps it names depends on those pages far more than on App Store rank.
How does ChatGPT choose apps to recommend?
It searches (OpenAI says through third-party providers and partner content; independent tests found its citations track Bing), reads the top pages and summarizes the apps they recommend. A store leader with little coverage can be missed entirely.
Does App Store ranking affect ChatGPT recommendations?
Somewhat. In our 78-category study on Gemini with Google Search, the store's #1 was named somewhere in the answer 82% of the time, but it was the assistant's first pick in only 49% of categories.
What is AI app discovery?
People asking an assistant which app to install instead of searching the App Store. AI search for apps works the same way in ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode and Perplexity: the answer comes from web pages the assistant retrieves, so coverage across the web counts alongside your listing.
Does llms.txt help ChatGPT recommend my app?
There's no evidence it does. Google says AI text files aren't needed, and Ahrefs found 97% of published llms.txt files got zero requests in May 2026.
How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my app?
Ask your category questions several times in a temporary chat with search on and record the apps and sources, as in the steps above. The free AI visibility checker on this site runs three questions through a search-grounded engine and returns a score, the rivals named instead of you and the domains behind the answer.
Will MetaRun post about my app or write reviews?
No. MetaRun measures and diagnoses AI visibility only. It never posts, comments, sends DMs, seeds threads or writes reviews, anywhere, for anyone.
